Welcome. If you are reading this, then your have taken you first step on our shared journey 'operation self-empowerment and advancement'.
I borrowed the phrase from 'Operation feed yourself' - you will remember, made famous by Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong ( whose policies of empowerment has been inspirational to me ). My philosophy and what drives me, as I have clear a number of times on this site is the effective attainment of knowledge, know-how and its application for our development and advancement in all aspects of our lives.
What we do know so far is this, whatever we have been doing so far is not working!
Language as we all know is fundamental to all human communication and development. In Ghana we rightfully keep our local languages to be spoken at home. However, in recent times there has been a trend for urban families, to refrain from speaking a local language at in the home. In so doing deprive they deprive they children of the one remaining link to what keeps them Ghanaian.
We Are supposed to use English as the official language but only a few elite and a further sizeable city population have a command of the language of the level of competency necessary to sustain a critical mass required for effective development and self-advancement of the country.
We are caught in a trap; of not being able to use our local language for development and education nor can we use English widely and effectively to move forward! It is my belief that we should use our local language for development.
Its natural.
Its innate.
Its second nature, it comes easy to us and its widely spoken and adopted.
There will be no natural/ linguistic obstacles to getting it used.
With our local languages as the key to the knowledge, our children can concentrate on the actual facts and information, science and history, mathematics etc.. we can communicate effectively and share rules and procedures, we can hold politicians and civil servants to account and have more people contribute to the development of the country.
It’s a no brainer.
We face a challenge however. We have abused our local languages. They have stagnated and almost died. They have turned into museum languages. They need to be modernised and revived with a massive body of literature, history, fiction, translations, media and art etc.. so that it can be relevant to our daily lives.
Are you excited about the work that needs to be done, because i am. I need your help to get it done. We need hundreds and thousands of people. Ordinary people who use the language to get it done.
